With everything you want to accomplish in 2018, it’s easy to make grandiose resolutions–which then, of course, get forgotten by about March. But if one of your resolutions is to have a better smile in 2018, we can help! Dividing your goal into smaller pieces is a good start. Here are some simple things you can do to give your mouth the best chance of a healthy smile this year!

New Year, New Toothbrush: Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months. This is a great time to replace the brushes of your whole family!

Storage Resolutions: Make sure to store your toothbrush in an open, well-ventilated area, away from other toothbrushes. If you must store them together, make sure the heads don’t touch, as that spreads germs between toothbrushes, contaminating them.
“Selfish” Can Be Good: NEVER share toothbrushes with anyone. This contaminates the toothbrush and can spread bacteria, food particles, and even disease from person to person. If your toothbrush has been contaminated, throw it away immediately. Buy a new brush as soon as possible.

Be Safe: Unfortunately, winter time often means “cold and flu season,” as well. Some people prefer to replace their toothbrushes after being sick. Though it is unlikely you will get yourself sick again (unless you are severely immunocompromised), it is certainly possible that your toothbrush may touch other toothbrushes and contaminate them, spreading the illness.

In order to have a top-notch tooth brushing routine, you need to stay abreast the best ways to clean the smile. Because brushing is such a repetitive technique, many people daze over when they scrub, which can result in an improper brushing routine. If this is the case for you, it’s time to brush up on the brushing basics. To help you do so, our dentist, Dr. Chad S. Burt, is happy to give you some tips and recommendations.

First, remember to brush your teeth twice each day for two minutes each time. When you brush, don’t rush your technique. This will help you completely clean the smile. If you have a hard time remembering to brush, remind yourself with a sticky note or alarm. If you have trouble brushing for two minutes, turn on a two-minute song, YouTube video, or timer when you scrub.

Second, remember to use the proper equipment when brushing. It’s recommended to brush with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste that have been approved by the American Dental Association. The soft bristles will clean your teeth and care for your gums and fluoride will strengthen your smile. When your toothbrush bristles have frayed or when you have used your brush for 3-4 months, you need to replace it.

Third, remember to keep your toothbrush clean. Just rinse the bristles with warm water when you’re done brushing. Then, store the toothbrush upright so it can dry. Then, once the bristles are dry, place a toothbrush cover over the brush, but only if you desire.
